2. Voltage Transformation (Power Transformers)
They step down grid voltage to levels suitable for charging equipment, ensuring compatibility and electrical isolation for safety.

Application of Instrument Transformers in Substations

Instrument transformers, including current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs), are essential components in electrical substations. They serve two primary functions:
1. Measurement: They safely step down high currents and voltages to standardized, low levels that can be handled by measuring instruments (like ammeters and voltmeters) and energy meters. This allows for accurate monitoring of power flow.

2. Protection: They provide isolated and proportional signals to protective relays. These relays continuously monitor these signals. If they detect a fault (e.g., a short circuit or overload), they automatically trigger circuit breakers to disconnect the faulty section, protecting expensive equipment and ensuring system stability.
In short, instrument transformers are the "eyes" of the substation, enabling the safe, accurate, and reliable operation of the power system by monitoring and protecting it.
